Headless Fowl

by Big John Bates: Noirchestra

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Heralding the return of Big John Bates is Headless Fowl, the darkest music Bates has put out since Bates Motel ... or Annihilator. They call it Americana Noir.

Breeding dark cabaret with the roots music Bates is famous they add to the impact with rustic, soulful vocals and lyrics. Sung both by Bates & upright bassist Brandy Bones the EP was produced by Robert Ferbrache (16 Horsepower, Woven Hand, Slim Cessna). It has the sweeping intensity and dark feel that comes from the depths of Denver's Absinthe Studios.

Americana-UK Review: Vancouver-based Big John Bates’ seems to have more in common with a slasher movie than with the Old Weird Southern Gothic we know and love – these aren’t ghosts and vampires plodding around the swamps, but something pretty gruesome. Probably with a machete. A big machete. Setting the tone is the instrumental opener “Amerkin” … it moves from mournful bass with subdued drums and spectral guitar to a powerhouse of railroad drumming and blood curdling yells. Musically it’s a blend of Jack White style blues, Calliope organ, thumping drums and banshee wails. It’s hypnotic and intriguing but be careful – the left hand may be beckoning – but the hand hidden behind the back is holding that knife, Jack. It may only last a whisker over eighteen minutes but they are eighteen unforgettable minutes – raw and knowing and powerful and half-joking – and all worth hearing.

Big John Bates: Noirchestra Vancouver, British Columbia

Big John Bates is a musician long known for reinvention and his Noirchestra nails that with 2019’s “Skinners Cage”. The new LP uses elements from the Americana noir of 2015’s “From the Bestiary” and the rustic punk of 2012’s “Battered Bones”. On “Skinners Cage” the Noirchestra truly earns its devilish name. ... more
